The body of the frozen moon fish is flat and the meat is rich and tender. The frozen moonfish is found in tropical and subtropical waters of India and the Western Pacific Ocean. China produces in the South China Sea and the East China Sea, with the South China Sea producing more. The frozen Moon fish live mainly in deeper waters, sometimes swimming to coastal waters to feed, and even found in river estuary areas. It is a carnivorous fish, feeding on zooplankton or benthic organisms. Likes to chase bright things, has phototaxis.

In contrast, land freezing involves the fish being processed and then soaked in ice water before freezing. These different methods can have varying impacts on the quality of the fish
